Skiing
Few ski resorts on earth can rival Zermatt for sheer scale and drama. The surrounding region encompasses more than 14 glaciers and 38 peaks rising above 4,000 metres, providing a backdrop of almost otherworldly grandeur. Across 350 kilometres of groomed pistes, 53 lifts connect the three principal sectors of Rothorn, Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, offering beautifully varied terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers alike. Zermatt is also one of Europe's most reliably snow-sure destinations, and a connection across the border to the Italian resort of Cervinia means that adventurous skiers can extend their day into a neighbouring country entirely.
Beyond the marked runs, Zermatt's heavily glaciated landscape conceals some of the most rewarding off-piste terrain in the Alps. The services of a local mountain guide are strongly recommended for those who wish to explore it responsibly, as experienced guides carry an intimate, lifelong knowledge of the mountain's hidden lines and seasonal conditions. For the most extraordinary ski experience of all, a heli-skiing excursion opens up remote and otherwise inaccessible terrain including the Monte Rosa, the Aschorn and the Alphubeljoch. A helicopter flight over Zermatt also provides a perspective on the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks that is simply impossible to achieve from the ground.
After a long and exhilarating day on the mountain, our Alpine Collection chalets in Zermatt offer the perfect sanctuary. Thoughtfully selected for their position, comfort and craftsmanship, each property provides a refined retreat in which to restore and reflect, before returning to the slopes the following morning.
